IVC Filters

Inferior vena cava (IVC) filters are placed surgically in the human body and are designed to keep blood clots from reaching the heart and lungs.

Before 2002, IVC filters were considered permanent. After 2002, manufacturing companies have marketed their IVC filters as permanent or removable. With that, IVC filter use skyrocketed. Because of the manufacturer’s marketing, doctors started using IVC filters as a preventive, temporary solution when doing surgeries, like lap band surgeries, that inherently had higher risk of blood clots. The intention was to remove filters months after surgery. However, doctors often had difficulty trying to remove the filters.

What are the complications from IVC Filters?

Individuals with IVC filters often have to undergo life-threatening medical procedures including additional surgeries to have the IVC filter removed and any damage in the body repaired.  Complications of the IVC Filters include:

  • Infection,
  • Filter breakage,
  • Filter migration to the heart or other organs,
  • Deep vein thrombosis,
  • Organ perforation,
  • Embolization, and
  • Blockage by the device.
